Most offices have a snack graveyard. It’s the shelf where the same box of granola bars has been sitting since spring, a few feet from the empty spot where the good chips used to be. Stocking snacks nobody wants wastes money, and running out of the ones people love sends them out the door to the nearest convenience store.
Getting the mix right matters because snacking is a constant part of the workday. Circana research shows that 48.8% of American consumers snack three or more times a day, and for full-time employees, plenty of those snacks happen at work.
What Employees Want from Office Snacks Right Now
Snack preferences have shifted over the last few years. The Future of Snacking 2025 report from Conagra Brands and Circana found that protein-forward, portion-controlled, and nutrient-dense snacks are on the rise, especially among Gen Z and Millennials, who now make up a large share of the workforce.
GLP-1 medications are pushing in the same direction. According to Circana, 23% of US households now include someone using one, and those shoppers are buying more protein, fiber, and healthy fats while cutting back on sugar and refined carbs.
Flavor still drives choices. The same Conagra report found that globally inspired snacks reached $5.7 billion in retail sales, with 22% volume growth over three years. People want snacks that are better for them, and they still want them to taste good.
Office Snack Ideas by Category
The best breakroom mixes pull from several categories so every employee finds something they like.
Protein snacks. Beef jerky, meat sticks, protein bars, roasted nuts, trail mix, cheese crisps, and roasted chickpeas hold people over between meetings far better than a candy bar.
Better-for-you salty snacks. Popcorn, pretzels, baked chips, veggie straws, and seaweed snacks satisfy a salt craving with fewer calories than a standard bag of chips.
Lower sugar sweets. Dark chocolate, portion-sized cookies, low sugar granola bars, and dried fruit without added sugar give people a treat without overdoing it.
Fresh and refrigerated items. Fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, string cheese, hummus cups, and hard-boiled eggs. These need refrigeration and frequent rotation, which is where a micro market or managed pantry earns its keep.
Bold flavors. Hot honey, chili lime, sriracha, and other globally inspired flavors put a new spin on familiar snacks. Rotating a few in keeps the selection from feeling stale.
The classics. Keep some familiar favorites on hand. A breakroom stocked only with health food gets less use, and healthy vending works best when better-for-you items sit alongside the snacks people already know.
Drinks. Sparkling water, cold brew, unsweetened tea, kombucha, and electrolyte drinks. Pair them with office coffee service and filtered water to keep teams hydrated through warm Southern California afternoons.
Plan for Dietary Needs
Not everyone can grab whatever is on the shelf. Include gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, and nut-free options, and keep them clearly labeled. If someone in the office has a serious nut allergy, ask your provider which products to leave out entirely.
Let Sales Data Choose the Mix
The most reliable way to learn what employees eat is to track it. Cashless vending machines and micro markets record every purchase, and a good pantry provider tracks which items get restocked most. After a few months, that data shows what to keep, what to cut, and where to test something new. Our post on improving breakroom ROI through smarter product selection covers this in more detail.
Asking helps too. A quick survey or a request card in the breakroom surfaces products you might not think to try.
Pick the Right Breakroom Format
How you offer snacks shapes what you can stock:
- Pantry service is paid for by the company and free to employees. Our guide to pantry service explains how it works.
- Micro markets offer the widest selection, including fresh food and meals, with self checkout.
- Vending machines fit smaller spaces and provide around-the-clock access at no cost to the employer.
Many office breakrooms combine a free pantry with a micro market or vending machine.
